Abstract : Nonlinear sigma models with Riemannian manifolds as targets play an important role in the derivations of some deep conjectures in geometry. The study of these models will also shed light on the millennium problem on the existence of Yang-Mills theory and the mass gap conjecture. Unfortunately there is still no mathematical construction of nonlinear sigma models. In this talk, I will outline a program to construct new algebraic structures from a Riemannian manifold which carry not only local information but also global information such as eigenfunctions and eigenforms of the Laplacian and eigenspinors of the Dirac operator. In the case that the Riemannian manifold is a torus, these algebraic structures indeed give the sigma model associated to the torus.
