Abstract: Biological patterns are often formed against spatially non-uniform backgrounds. Such phenomena are usually modeled in terms of nonlinear partial differential equations with variable coefficients. If all coefficients are constant, stationary patterns refer to non-constant stationary solutions. In contrast, the meaning of pattern is not clear anymore in the variable-coefficient case.
In this talk I would like to review a few examples of pattern formation in reaction-diffusion equations with variable coefficients in the hope of extracting basic problems to be addressed in systematic study of pattern formation.
