Abstract : Usually a `pattern' means a nontrivial spatial structure. Alan Turing found that a pattern emerges from a spatially uniform state as a result of the diffusion driven instability.

During the embryonic developmental process we observe various types of "spontaneous formation of patterns in spatially non-uniform environments", as was also pointed out by Turing. However, what is a pattern in a spatially non-uniform environment?
