Abstract: The exceptional Lie group G_2 is the automorphism group of the octonians. It acts transitively on the associative Grassmannian with stabilizer SO(4). Thus the associative Grassmannian can be identified with the homogeneous space G_2/SO(4). In joint work with Diarmuid Crowley, Achim Krause and Dietmar Salamon we study the problem how one can decide whether a given manifold is diffeomorphic to G_2/SO(4). The proof is a combination of the most common classification methods of manifolds and so it serves as an introduction to these methods. I will keep it very elementary.
