Title: Three-scale singular limits
Speaker: Steve Schochet (School of Mathematical Sciences,Tel Aviv University)
Abstract: Many physical systems contain small parameters, such as the Mach number, Alfven number, and Rossby number, such that the character of the system changes as those parameters tend to zero. The classical theory of singular limits analyzes the situation when all parameters present in a system tend to zero at the same rate. The prototypical example of such a system is the incompressible limit in fluid dynamics. In recent joint work with Qiangchang Ju and Bin Cheng we obtain uniform existence and convergence results for certain cases in which two parameters of a system tend to zero at different rates. Such systems yield a much richer class of limit systems.
