The idea is NOT to explain music using mathematics. The idea is to present three arts next to each other giving the audience a chance to experience them as they are. The program starts with about 20 minutes of classical music played by me on the Cello. I will play a Vivaldi Sonata with Cembalo which will play through loud speakers (I bring the cembalo part on my laptop). Next I will play 4 movements from the first Bach Cello Suite for Cello alone.
Then we jump without any connection to the mathematical part. I will - very slowly - explain what a prime number is and pose the question which prime number is a sum of two squares. Together with the audience I will make a table of small primes where we decide together, when it is possible and when not. It would be great if there would be an equipment which allows me to write something which the people can see on the screen - as a replacement of a black board. The end of the first mathematical section will be the formulation of Fermat’s Theorem, that an odd prime p is the sum of squares if and only if p = 1 mod 4.
